Invention Scoops Top Award

The inventive talents of a Kendal teenager look set to propel him towards a promising future after he was crowned one of the best young engineers in the North West.

Jacob Deane, 19, is celebrating after receiving a coveted award in the North West Young Engineer for Britain competition for the second year running. The former Queen Katherine School pupil won his age group with his 'Bike Sled' project.

The working device, which attaches to a 4x4 vehicle, is used to hoist objects such as canoes, skis or bicycles on to the roof rack safely and smoothly.

Jacob, who is currently studying Ship Science at Southampton University, has already applied for a patent for the lifting mechanism that is currently pending.

"I was delighted to have done so well again," said Jacob
"There were some younger school pupils at Salford University as well who were fascinated by the project and asked lots of questions about it which was also very inspiring and memorable."

Jacob also achieved success in the competition last year when he was invited to the Old Royal Naval College, in London, to take part in the final after winning the overall title for the North West.

He had made an automatic starting device for sailing races to replace the traditional system that uses a series of flags.

"It was really helpful to have done so well last year because it helped me decide what type of thing to design this time."
"I'm also very grateful for the support given to me by the technology teachers at school. The whole process has been enjoyable and has given me the confidence to carry on designing."
