The Vehicle

The plan is to go an a bit of an adventure in my 1979 Series III Landrover, affectionatly refered to as 'Ermintrude'. She is a fairly standard short wheel base series III, with the 2¼ litre petrol engine - by far the simplest and therefore easiest to fix 4x4 in the world! Its pretty good on the rough stuff too - showing up most modern off-roaders. Not bad for a 28 year old vehicle!
A few modifications have been made to Ermintrude since I bought her two years ago.
- She has a new fuel tank - the old one leaked slightly.
- New clutch slave cylinder - the old one leaked causeing a drop in hydraulic pressure and no way to dis-engage the clutch - made for some interesting driving!
- CD/Radio has been fitted - even has iPod attachment! - this is much better than CDs when off-roading as CDs skip!
- New Defender wing-mirrors. I broke one of the old ones and decided that the Defender style was much beefier...
- Fog and Reverse lights have been fitted - not a legal necessity in a vehicle this old, but useful.
- Front bumper mounted tow bar - very useful for manouvering boats down at the sailing club!
- Bonnet mount for the spare wheel - gets it out of the boot and makes the landie look a bit harder!
- Front Runner Expedition roof rack fitted - very useful, substantially increases the load capacity.
- Serviced brakes - new brake master cylinder and brake shoes on all wheels.
- Fitted new starter motor - the old one really was shot!
- New Coat of paint - same colour as now, just with a new shiny coat!
- New rear springs - a leaf on one of them fractured, failing the MOT!
- New rear half chassis fitted - the old chassis had got too many holes in it to pass the MOT and was not feasible to patch repair
Still to do!
- Fit a roof tent - guess this requires the purchase of a roof rent first!
- Fit fire extinguisher
- Fit soundproofing
- Fit wing mounted shovel and axe holders, complete with shovel and axe!
- Fit gas burner to rear door
- Fit work light at rear of vehicle...
- Fit some video camera mounts and sort out a charging circuit!
